Water runoff issues don't happen overnight. Back in May 2025, we completed a pathway edging project for a client in Austin, Texas 78745. Months later, the client reached back out after noticing movement along the border. When we returned to assess the issue, it became clear that erosion from water runoff was the root cause. What started as minor washout gradually led to shifting edging and an unstable walkway border. During the assessment, the path of water runoff became visible, confirming the issue was structural and drainage related, not just a surface failure. The drainage system in place was no longer doing its job, allowing runoff to erode the base beneath the walkway. To properly address the problem; 1. We rerouted the drainage in front of the pathway to eliminate runoff in that area. 2. We rebuilt the base beneath the border with 2-3 inches of crushed limestone to improve drainage beneath the Blackstar gravel. 3. Concrete was applied to increase the limestone's bond strength, and the existing pipe was lightly trenched and repositioned so it would run properly underneath, as shown in the photo below. After the initial repair, the client requested cleaner, more complete solution by extending the French drain discharge closer to the curb, ensuring water would be directed far enough away from the pathway. We then quoted and completed a proper downspout filter and French drain upgrade, addressing the root cause of the issue and delivering a long-term drainage solution built for stability and peace of mind. What Was Accomplished Clean, proper drainage discharging near the curb, closer to the road. Downspout Upgrade & Rerouting A filtered downspout connection was installed and connected into a flexible corrugated extension, redirecting roof runoff away from the foundation and toward the new drainage path. Base Reconstruction & Drainage Support The trench was excavated, weed fabric was installed and gravel was placed to form the drainage base. Problem Solved: Drainage Transformation in South Austin, Texas. Drain Pipe Selection For this project, we installed a FLEX-Drain 4" perforated pipe with a fabric sock, along with a drainage grate cover. The pipe is designed specifically for French drains, collects water along its full length, and helps prevent clogging. Its flexibility also makes it ideal for landscape installations. The system was then covered with soil to restore ground level. What had been a recurring problem for the client was fully resolved after the upgrade. Pipe Types Explained A common question from our client and worth sharing
For this project, Flex-Drain was the most appropriate and effective solution. Why Gravel and Limestone Matter A common question from our client and worth sharing. Gravel is essential for proper drainage and stability. Because water flow in this area can be strong, the gravel disperses water evenly, slows it down, reduces erosion, and prevents pooling. This allows the system to perform far more effectively than placing a perforated pipe directly into soil. The Result: A One-Time Solution Built to Last By controlling water at the source and rebuilding the foundation correctly, this drainage upgrade eliminated the cause of erosion and stabilized the walkway border. The area now drains properly, the base is secure, and future movement has been prevented. Most importantly, this provides our client with peace of mind, a one-time solution completed with care, intention and long term performance in mind. If you're experiencing erosion, shifting borders, or drainage issues, the key is always the same. Manage the water first, then rebuild on a solid foundation. 💚 We're your trusted, locally owned family business. Small by choice and hands-on by nature.
